Choose The Right Size Life Jacket

So it's time to buy a new life jacket for either yourself, a friend or one of your beloved children. This decision is really important as it plays a huge role in the individual's safety. Comfort is also a really important part of choosing the right life jacket. Let's start with picking out the best life jacket for your kids.

For kids it's relatively simple as choosing the right size is generally based on weight ranges. If you know the child's weight, then you can reference the Size Chart on our website.

For adults it will take a little bit more effort to choose the perfect life jacket as sizes can vary from your usual t-shirt and jumper sizes. If you know your chest size, you're off to a great start, and if you don't then we would highly advise you measure it using a soft tape measure. Once you know your chest size, then you can cross reference that with our Adult Size Chart on our website.

Now that we have the correct size picked out, let's discuss the different fits for both neoprene and nylon life jackets.

On a neoprene life jacket, generally you should need to stretch the zip ever so slightly to put the life jacket on - this ensures a snug fit. Always check the buckles are tightened up securely and one extra precaution you can take to be 100% confident it's the right size is to try and lift the top of the life jacket up from your shoulders. If it stays secure and in place then you've got the right size!

Nylon life jackets are not as flexible as neoprene, so when you put on the life jacket, the front panels should line up nice and easily, and the buckles should follow. If there's a large gap in the front panels, and you're having to loosen the buckles quite a lot, then maybe you need a larger size. On the other hand, if the front panels are overlapping and you need to tighten the buckels a lot, then the vest is too big.

Lastly, a lot of life jackets come in different styles, so remember to repeat this process every time you purchase or wear a new life jacket, and if you can't find one that's perfect, then maybe try a different style life jacket.

Remember, before you head out waterskiing, wakeboarding or wakesurfing (or any other watersports), always test your lifejacket in a safe environment to ensure you have the correct size.

Have a happy and safe time on the water!
